International hybrid workshop on “Asian Food and Power in a Global Context”

“The use of food and cuisine as an instrument to create a cross- cultural understanding in the hopes of improving interactions and cooperation” (Chapple-Sokol, 2012) Food is not only a vital part of our lives, representing history, traditions, and culture, but food can also be used as an instrument to create cross-cultural understanding. In fact, food is the base of every society and at the same time it is a tool to communicate ideas, values, identities, and attitudes. Consequently, the topic of food brings together issues of economics, politics, nationality, family, and religion. For us, food is both a weapon and a blanket, a control and a protest tool. Moreover, besides food being a focal point for public policy making, social activism, and cultural mobilization, we perceive food to have the ability to both create and dismantle boundaries. At the same time, we are aware that the preparation, sharing, and consuming of food play an important role regarding relations among society’s members, as a nation and its culture are defined by the meals that people consume and the people who eat those cuisines. In our workshop, we therefore want to investigate the inherent (cultural, social, and political) power of Asian food in a global context. In the context of Asian food, there is nothing new about its beginning of globalization with the European colonization of Asia. Since that time, Asian food and foodstuff spread among the people of colonial powers – such as soy, ginger, and rice. And in the last couple decades, Asian food and cuisines even became global culinary trends (Farber 2015), sought after for their exciting “exoticism”, and even symbolizing exclusiveness. In our understanding, Asian societies’ emphasis on food is conspicuously greater than in the “West” as the power of food is involved in more aspects of life: Food-focused activities and knowledge occupy greater portion of daily activities, incl. religious aspects such as food symbolism and food offerings in general. By tracing Asian food both inside and outside of Asia, in course of this workshop, we want to explore the power of food in regard to the relationship between food and religious rituals, between food and identity construction, as well as on food in international politics. This international workshop aims at bringing together the expertise of scholars of various disciplines whose work focuses on the various power-related topics in terms of Asian food. Interested scholars are encouraged to submit an abstract (max. 500 words) and a short biography (max. 150 words) in English, until October 29, 2021. <div class="ai1ec-event-avatar alignleft timely"><img src="https://sites.ff.cuni.cz/ujca/wp-content/uploads/sites/63/2020/03/logo_site.png" width="100" height="100" /></div>The Chair of South Asian Studies at the University of Warsaw, Poland in collaboration with the South Asia Institute at Heidelberg University, Germany, and the Institute of Asian Studies at Charles University, Prague invites you for an intensive language workshop in the Bengali language. We offer you two intensive courses in spoken Bengali. Our experienced teachers from Prague, Heidelberg, and Warsaw will share their knowledge with you and help you to learn, speak and understand Bengali better. In the introductory course, participants will develop speaking, reading, listening, and writing skills and acquire a basic vocabulary of Bengali. The advanced course is aimed to develop a deeper understanding of grammar, communicative skills, and the ability to understand literary texts. Participants are asked to acquire a basic knowledge of the Bengali script prior to the course. For this purpose, we recommend: 1. Teach Yourself Bengali by William Radice, published By Teach Yourself Books; 2. Bengali. A Comprehensive Grammar, Routledge Comprehensive Grammars. Each course is going to have 37 classes altogether, 90 min each. Classes are scheduled to be held Mondays to Fridays from 9.30 am to 3.30 pm (3 classes/day) and Saturdays from 9.30 am to 1 pm (2 classes). There will be ample opportunity to practice the script and to clarify any doubts and questions regarding the language and grammatical rules. Tibetan Pilgrimages Through Time: 1990-2018

<div class="ai1ec-event-avatar alignleft timely"><img src="https://sites.ff.cuni.cz/ujca/wp-content/uploads/sites/63/2019/11/Snímek-obrazovky-2019-11-06-v-11.13.58-300x189.png" width="300" height="189" /></div><h3>Katia Buffetrille (EPHE/CRCAO, Paris)</h3> As is well-known pilgrimages are one of the main religious activities in the Tibetan world. As soon as the Chinese government relaxed its policies on religion in the 1980s, pilgrimages that had been banned during several decades resumed on a massive scale. During many fieldworks conducted along these years, I was able to observe the evolution of several pilgrimages, focusing my research on circumambulations of sacred mountains. Nowadays, this tradition is undergoing several processes: modernization, sinization, buddhicization, folklorization, which have a very strong impact on the pilgrim’s beliefs and behavior as well as on the religious landscape and ultimately question the fate of the pilgrimages themselves. The traditional circumambulation around Amnye Machen mountain, in Amdo, is one of the pilgrimages under threat. In comparison with my previous observations in 1990 and 1992, I could already witness in 2002 the beginning of such mutations. With the completion of a road some years ago, the pilgrimage that I did in the Summer 2018 turned out to be so different from the previous ones that the very question of “do we have to rethink Tibetan pilgrimage?” is raised. In this communication based on textual sources and observations, I will describe the recent developments affecting this essential religious practice among Tibetans.Europe/Prague

Past and present of the Bengali heterodox religious movements

Přednášející: dr. Michał Panasiuk (University of Warsaw) During my lecture I will try to present a short history of some of the Bengali minor religious communities and their ideas. Not only the names of those groups like Bauls, Sahebdhani, Kartabhaja are very particular and surrounded by an aura of mystery and secret, so are their beliefs. Who were the members of those communities so highly condemned in the past days and often praised during our times? Why did some of those groups survived and even flourished in XX century and why many of them vanished completely? Many of them are on one side an important part of Bengal’s cultural map, moreover, they are often used as symbols of national identity. On the other side many of them still face persecution. The lecture will be supported by some videos of Bauls performing their beautiful and highly esoteric songs.Europe/Prague

Ústav Asijských studií FF UK srdečně zve na dvě mimořádné přednášky Heleen De Jonckheere <ol> <li>Jainism: an Indian tradition of the past and the present (5.3)</li> <li>Jaina thought: a religious philosophy from India (12.3)</li> </ol> The lectures introduce students to Jaina philosophy within its socio-historical and socio-religious contexts. In view of the soteriological goal of breaking the cycle of transmigration, Jaina thinkers established a distinct philosophical system that was characterized by ontological dualism, epistemological perspectivism and ethics of non-violence. The lectures will detail these aspects of Jaina philosophy and frame them within the Jaina ‚mythological‘ understanding of the universe and of time. Special attention will be given to the strategies by which Jaina thinkers both related to and distanced themselves from other Indian traditions. The aim of both lectures is to demonstrate that Jaina thought made important contributions to the fields of ethics, ontology and epistemology, but nevertheless, as a religio-philosophical system, was strongly informed by a focus on humanity and ethical concerns. Heleen De Jonckheere has a background in Indology (Bachelor and Master) and is currently finishing a PhD degree at Ghent University on a Jaina textual tradition by the title of Dharmaparīkṣā. Her research interests include Jaina religion, puranic-epic literature, and translation studies, next to histories of Indian traditions in general.Europe/Prague

Prvním tématem bude vývoj svatebního obřadu u etnika Toradžů z ostrova Sulawesi, který představí Dr. Michaela Budiman. Obsahem její přednášky bude střet autochtonních prvků s indonéskou modernitou, ať už žitou nebo deklarovanou. Druhou přednášku přednese Dr. Tomáš Petrů a představí dynamiku vývoje islámu v Indonésii. Na konkrétních příkladech přiblíží změny a procesy, kterými toto náboženství v posledních letech v Indonésii, nejlidnatější islámské zemi světa, prochází. Třetí přednáška bude zaměřena na problematiku tradičních přírodních komodit a jejich využití v moderním globalizovaném světě a přednese ji Dr. Ondřej Pokorný. Zaměří se především na nelegální ochod s přírodninami a na socioekonomické aspekty s tím spojené. <h2>Komparace tradičních a moderních toradžských svateb</h2> PhDr. Michaela Budiman, Ph.D., Ústav asijských studií FF UK Indonéské etnikum Toradžů, obývající jedenáctý největší ostrov světa, je známé především svými funerálními rituály, nicméně i jejich svatby jsou nesmírně pozoruhodným synkretickým fenoménem. Moderní toradžské svatby obsahují jak prvky autochtonního toradžského náboženství Aluk Todolo, tak elementy zvykového práva adat. Dá se v nich však nalézt i vliv různých křesťanských denominací, které zásadním způsobem formují nejen podobu všech soudobých rituálů, ale i celé společnosti. Prezentace bude založena na rozhovorech s jedním z posledních znalců původního náboženství Aluk Todolo panem Tato’ Dena’. Hlavními tématy budou namlouvání, potenciální důvody k odmítnutí ženicha, výběr „vhodného“ partnera, samotná svatba, postmaritální rezidence a rozvod v dřívějších dobách. Zaměří se také na roli malajských pantunů při namlouvání a existenci dohodnutých sňatků. Na závěr bude následovat popis současné toradžské svatby, která je na rozdíl od původních sňatků poměrně komplikovaná. Politická transformace na konci minulého tisíciletí spojená s pádem dlouholetého autoritářského režimu generála Suharta a vytrvalý saúdský export ortodoxního islámu do souostroví ovšem indonéskou společnost zásadně proměnily. Krom toho se náboženství silně zpolitizovalo a zároveň v indonéském islámu – který má mnoho podob – začal dominovat konzervativní trend, jenž je příznačný svou intolerancí vůči náboženským, etnickým a sexuálním menšinám. Nábožensky konzervativní proud pak v uplynulé dekádě našel spojence mezi pravicovými populisty, což vedlo k vytvoření nového trendu – „toxického“ islámského populismu. V reakci na polarizaci společnosti vyvolané tímto fenoménem se indonéská vláda vůči islámskému extremismu začala razantněji vymezovat. Jisté kruhy toto vítají s tím, že je to „pět minut po dvanácté“, zatímco jiné upozorňují na fakt, že se tak děje na úkor lidských práv a svobod. Současně je nucena našlapovat opatrně, aby se nedotkla sentimentů muslimské většiny. Ondřej Pokorný, Ph.D., Katedra asijských studií FF UPOL Obyvatelé Indonésie a celé jihovýchodní Asie byli od nepaměti zvyklí využívat okolní přírodu jako zdroj své primární i sekundární obživy. Také v tradičním lokálním léčitelství bylo zapotřebí zvířecích artefaktů nebo rostlinných produktů. S rozvojem kultur a vznikem dálkového obchodu mezi Východní Asií a Evropou se objevil fenomén poptávky vzdálených regionů po přírodninách, kterým byly přisuzovány magické vlastnosti a které tak byly ve svém přirozeném prostředí poprvé vystaveny tlakům ohrožujícím jejich populace. Největší tlak přicházel z Číny, jejíž majoritní entity si zvykly užívat pro svou léčbu a svůj jídelníček stále více ingrediencí pocházejících z jihovýchodní Asie – žraločí ploutve, vlaštovčí hnízda, tygří penisy, mořské okurky, šupiny luskounů nebo přírodní pryskyřice tropických stromů tvoří jen část z celé škály poptávaných přírodnin. Křest knihy Pak Mingju – Castella

Jihokorejský prozaik Pak Mingju (nar. 1968) se svými absurdními, lehce filosofickými, fantaskními a skvěle napsanými texty zabydlel v posledním desetiletí mezi elitou světových spisovatelů. Už první sbírka povídek Castella vyvolala senzaci a nadšení čtenářů napříč světadíly i generacemi, podobný úspěch měly také následující novely a romány. V deseti povídkách Castelly bloumáme reálným světem, ovšem s nadstandardní nabídkou: zavíráme dobro a zlo do zuřivé ledničky, cestujeme po světě bez omezení na kachních šlapadlech, do vesmíru nás vystřelí letadélko na gumičce, při nadměrném provozování onlinových her se staneme roztomilým mývalem. O vlastní bezvýznamnosti čtenáře poučí povolání pušmena, ale i soužití ve stísněném prostoru. Kdo je příliš spokojený se stavem zeměkoule, pochopí, že je třeba počítat s útokem krakatic nebo s UFO vyslaných korporáty. Na druhé straně máme vždycky možnost stát se predátorem a vydělit se z davu ponižovaných. Pro čtení Pak Mingjua nemusí být člověk vzdělaný, natož rozumět korejským reáliím. Není ani nutné pokoušet se přečíst všechny vrstvy jeho textů, složitě nad nimi spekulovat nebo probouzet vlastní špatné sociální svědomí. Pak Mingju je mezi korejskými postmodernisty fenomén. Workshop „Converbs from a cross-linguistic perspective“

In the last twenty years, the concept of converbs has been slowly gaining traction and recognition among the wider linguistic community. The term converb is being used in place of several other older terms such as gerunds, deepričastie, adverbial participle, etc. There have been also various attempts to delimit the phenomenon, e.g. Haspelmath 1995, Ross 2016, that, however, do not agree on all aspects of the definition. Broadly speaking, converbs can be understood as adverbial verbal forms, though their actual function can vary both across languages and across constructions. We would like to discuss the following issues: – Converbs as dependent adverbial form or a device for clause chaining? – Coordination vs subordination (co-subordination?) – Converbs on the margins (non-prototypical cases of converb usage) – Use of converbs in mono-clausal multiverbal constructions (MMC) – Is the notion of converbs cross-linguistically a useful label? <div class="page" title="Page 1"> <div class="layoutArea"> <div class="column"> Institute of Sociology, Czech Academy of Sciences, Institute of Asian Studies, Faculty of Arts, Charles University and Centre of Global Studies of the Institute of Philosophy, Czech Academy of Sciences invite you to the international conference Indo-Pacific: The Next Crucible of Geopolitics? </div> </div> <div class="layoutArea"> <div class="column"> Spanning in its most extensive imagination from the eastern coast of Africa towards the western coast of the Americas, the Indo-Pacific is a geopolitical concept in the making. While its discursive continuities can be traced to interwar Germany, the contemporary notion of Indo-Pacific is most often connected with Indo-Japanese strategic deliberations followed by the speech by the Japanese prime minister Shinzo Abe in the Parliament of India in 2007 when he famously defined it as the confluence of two seas. From a core concern with the freedom of navigation to a more solid security arrangements like the QUAD and its extensions, the idea of Indo-Pacific seems to gradually attain more material contours. The United States‘ Pacific Command was renamed Indo-Pacific Command in 2018. Since then, four European countries as well as the EU have formulated strategic policy papers towards the region. This conference will bring together experts from the fields of Political Science, Security Studies and South Asian Studies to look from different angles at what is increasingly becoming the crucible of geopolitics. Language Contact in the Altaic World: A Multiperspective Approach

<div class="ai1ec-event-avatar alignleft timely"><img src="https://sites.ff.cuni.cz/ujca/wp-content/uploads/sites/63/2021/11/1636749544632blob-250x300.png" width="250" height="300" /></div>Language contact has long been acknowledged to be a major factor in the development of languages. It is of particular importance for the group of languages traditionally labeled as Altaic, whose speakers have shared, and migrated across, vast areas of Eurasia for centuries, influencing each other, as well as coming into contact with vastly typologically different languages. Democracy in a Structurally Unequal Society

Jerome Samraj Assistant Professor, Department of Economics, Pondicherry University, India Visiting Professor, Centre for Modern Indian Studies, University of Gottingen, Germany In India, people are compartmentalized into mutually exclusive groups called castes, and these castes are organized in a graded hierarchy based on notions of ritual purity and pollution. While those castes which are considered to be of pure and high status had an overarching control over people belonging to all other communities as they had an absolute authority over the productive resources. The communities at the top of the ladder were considered to be ritual purists and were considered to be the people eligible to control land and water resources, the relative un-freedom of the communities increase as we move down the social order, and those at the bottom were treated as ‘untouchable’. Therefore, the caste system operated as the state in the pre-colonial society. The advent of the colonial state – with an external source of power – juridical, military and administrative powers – created a situation where the STATE was unrelated to the ideology of ritual purity and pollution and a set of CASTES. This created a socio-historical and political opportunity for every caste to approach the colonial government independently, as the authority was separated from the cultural authority of caste. While there was no individual rights and people’s rights, responsibilities, privileges and denials were determined by the castes system, the emergence of a modern state created the space for individual citizenship rights. Nevertheless, their access to state was determined by their relative position in the local socio-cultural economic and political hierarchy. As a result, people’s aspiration towards the state, and aspiration for right to equality was determined by the set of rights they were denied by the caste system. Therefore, the political aspirations of the non-brahmin ‘upper’ castes are different from the political aspirations of the ‘lower’ shudra castes, service castes, and that of the Dalits. This had varying implications on the rights-based consolidation of political interests as the demands for rights becomes more and more specific as we go down the social ladder. In other words, this lead to the isolation of the victims, while other sections who are part of the problem in the graded hierarchy can continue to remain indifferent. Thus, this presentation would shed light on the Dalit’s fight for social justice and equality and their participation in electoral democracy.Europe/Prague
