Annotation:

Buddhism became the state religion in Tibet during the reign of Trisong Detsen (Khri srong lde btsan, 742-794). Thereafter, Buddhism has become the basis of Tibetan culture and society. It is thus necessary to understand Tibetan Buddhism to comprehend Tibet and its culture fully. Tibetan Buddhism was gradually introduced to its surrounding countries and regions such as Bhutan, Sikkim, Mongolia, and Manchu, influencing local cultures significantly. This lecture maps Tibetan Buddhism within Buddhism at large and examines the influence of Tibetan Buddhism and culture on other regions and countries. It also introduces the history and current state of Tibetan studies (especially in Japan).
